The past few months have taken me to Nashville, TN, High Point, NC and now Boston, MA. I rarely travel this much but the change in pace has been welcome and exciting! Eventually, though, it feels good to slow down and get back to a regular routine. These photos are just a few snapshots outside the doors of Carolina’s loft where I work a few days of the week for Pulp Design Studios. It’s the coolest place and definitely makes a regular routine all the more enjoyable. What does your day-to-day look like?

Last week I visited a real, live ghost town. Well, an occupied ghost town. It’s complicated… let me explain. There’s this place in High Point, North Carolina, miles away from any major city or tourist attraction, and twice a year thousands of designers, buyers, and editors descend on it for one of the largest international furniture markets! Beautiful products (furniture, rugs, art, lighting, accessories, and more) from esteemed manufacturers and vendors are put on display long before retail stores have them on their shelves. Here’s a bit of context for your reference… 80,000 attendees… 12 million square feet of showroom space… And I was there! (thanks Beth and Carolina for bringing me along for Pulp Design Studios!) Disclaimer: please forgive my amateur photography for this post. When a gal is faced with 12 million square feet of showrooms to visit, things get a little speedy and blurry! You understand. And then after a week of hurried shopping and frantic note-taking, it’s all over, everyone goes home, and the place is empty! A real, live modern day ghost town. But the most amazing part of my adventure – besides the stunning designs, of course? I survived with not one blister or lost [...]

Okay, folks. I realize that I’ve been throwing around a lot of coded language and veiled comments these past several months. For those of you who have the convenience of knowing me in person, you’ve probably already heard the news. But for the rest of you, I can only imagine your total confusion. Well, grab a hot drink and pull up a chair because now it’s your turn. Today I’m sharing the official, no holds, full release scoop on “what’s up with Hilary Inspired“! All other things aside, Hilary Inspired has always been about one primary thing; art and style inspiration. When I first started the blog, my content was mostly gleaned from the portfolios of others and then re-blogged with a few added comments and insights. That system wasn’t sustaining and eventually I lost interest. A year and a half into my blog, I decided original work was much more my style and have since committed myself whole-heartedly to solely self-produced content. It’s been quite the ride of self-discovery! Along the way, my interest in writing, photography, and self-publishing have intensified. In addition, my questions about purpose and mission have also increased. Questions such as, “What am I [...]

I’m not exactly what you’d call a “numbers person”. I can work my way around a generous tip calculation, but let’s just say that my talents shine more brightly in other areas. Good thing. Because I’ve been desperately looking for an excuse to avoid adding up the days since I posted on this blog last. Deficiency is a good excuse, right? Well, unless of course you start getting phone calls and emails wondering where the heck you’ve been and if everything is alright… have you stopped blogging, do you need anything, are you still alive!?! In that case, no excuses count. A blogger just better suck it up, do the numbers, get freaked out, and start blogging again! At least that’s what I did. It’s funny, it took a short flight to Nashville and four cramped hours of forced offline-dom and a disconnection from work and email on a plane that felt far beyond it’s capacity within environments of artificially stabilized airflow… to catch a breath of fresh air. (by the way, my trip home was fantastic and i got lots of exciting things done! in addition to some super cool Style Story photo shoots, i also had the chance to [...]

I wasn’t sure whether I should publish this post or not… watching yourself on video is incredibly awkward and sharing it with the rest of the “world”… well, it isn’t much easier! But then, of course, this clip has already aired through many a Dallas home by now, not to mention this isn’t exactly the first time I’ve shared a video of myself on this site. So, I convinced myself to publish. The clip below is from a new TV show in Dallas called D Living, which was recently acquired by D Magazine. I was invited on the show to discuss the topic of shopping for furniture on Craigslist (inspired by this post) with the lovely Hilary Kennedy. Doesn’t she have such a beautiful name? I think you’ll agree, it’s a lot easier to navigate the underworld of Craiglist when you have a few key pointers to follow. Note-takers get ready… here goes! And for all my bullet-point-loving friends out there (me included!!), here’s a quick summary of the points I made for your reference.
How often does a girl get to shop using someone else’s money? In my case, not often. But this month, I did!! I was invited to participate in a thrift makeover competition (or Upcycle Challenge, as they’re calling it) for the Great Big Texas Home Show at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. The guidelines were simple. Use our $100 gift card (yes, ma’am!) and shop your favorite thrift stores for a diamond in the rough. Then purchase and transform! So, that’s exactly what I did. Of course, my first stop was my trusty “Berry Good Buys” where I found the perfect piece, a wood framed baby changing table. Then, I shopped a few other thrift stores in town for glasses, serving dishes, an ice bucket (do you see where I’m going with this?), and a shaker. Finally, I finished off my $100 budget with a few magic-making supplies from Michaels. Now, are you ready? Here’s the great big reveal… Before: After: It’s a bar table!! Pretty darn cool, huh? I have to admit, I was having a tad more fun than even I expected. A rickety piece of furniture, dirty glasses and dishes, a couple cans of black spray paint, [...]

Well, this is a funny coincidence. I’ve been holding onto this post for the past couple weeks due to the oddly warm weather we’ve been having and the fact that this outfit is more suited for cooler temps. Yes, even this mildly bundled ensemble would’ve been too warm for what we’ve been experiencing in Texas lately! Finally, last night I decided that it was time to post whether or not the local weather was fitting. It’s cold somewhere, right? Then, wouldn’t you know, the weather snapped back once again this AM. Perfect timing! Now I can share this chilly weather outfit post with the world and feel like I know what I’m talking about. A few details about the outfit… it’s nothing special, really. Just a swingy summer skirt (still in my closet because of the afore mentioned warm weather), an ivory wool turtleneck, a pair of classic tall black boots, funky earrings, and a wide brimmed hat – my latest thrift store score. I was at a loss for cute jackets to finish off the look so I decided to raid David’s wardrobe for something cozy and over-sized. This tweed number suited my purposes perfectly! Now, let’s hope this [...]

Disclaimer: This post may err more on the side of self-gratification than usual. You’ll have to forgive me. It’s been a rough couple days and I needed these flowers to cheer me up. I had a major slight in comparison digital crisis on Thursday. While updating and syncing my phone, an error occurred and a great deal of my iPhone data was lost (don’t ask me how… it’s very complicated). All the while being fully aware of the insignificance and comparative smallness of my troubles, I was feeling none the less irritated, frustrated, at points pissed, and eventually just plain bummed. A trip out of the house the next day helped me with perspective, a girl’s night in on Valentine’s Day lifted my spirits, and finally, a few minutes spent editing some lovely flower photos pulled me out of the remainder of my funk. It’s amazing what a good dose of perspective and flowers can do for the soul! The photos are from a flower arranging demo I attended while “reporting” for this D Home blog post earlier in the week. It was hosted at the Mockingbird Station West Elm in Dallas and taught by my florist friends Adam and Alicia [...]

Today I’m dropping in to share a quick video that was filmed last Fall with my friend Abbe Fenimore and the folks at Peacock Alley. Abbe, who I’ve had the great pleasure of working with on a multitude of design projects, was invited to style 3 different beds at the Peacock Alley showroom in Dallas, TX using pieces from Peacock Alley’s designer bedding collections. Lucky me… I got to join her! Peacock Alley’s products are really gorgeous and incredibly sumptuous… I tell ya, the textures are what really got me! Needless to say, Abbe and I had no trouble styling our looks. I know luxury bedding isn’t in my everyone’s budget. And no worries if that’s the case! In this video, Abbe shared several ideas for creating a beautifully styled bed that can be applied no matter what your budget.
In the past, I’ve considered myself a fairly healthy eater. Nothing crazy ambitious, you understand. Just good, decent eating habits. I stick to small portions. Fresh, whole foods and low fat meals are appealing to me. I enjoy a big, hearty salad. Heck, many times I even crave them!! I may grab an occasional fast food meal, but it’s not often. Well, that was my old mentality. Then I met Dana Card of Number One Le Jus, nutritionist of a cool new cafe/retail boutique that just opened up in Highland Park Village in Dallas. It’s an incredibly brilliant concept!! Charming decor, impeccable presentation, stylish clothing, and bright-eyed, smiley-faced staff that coax you in. Then, just when you think you have them figured out (cool shop, tasty coffee and drinks) BAM… they blow your mind with their knowledge of clean eating and balanced cleansing, concepts that are at the core of their philosophy. I don’t know much about juicing or cleansing. I’ve had several friends give the idea a try. But here’s the fantastic thing about Dana and her team at Le Jus. They’re incredibly open and inviting and will gladly walk you through the basic concepts behind their menu and delicious nutrient rich [...]
